Headhunters 05:40
Verse 1: Their call, echoed like a wall, a wall of people running and, charging my way My way, I think, what have I done, what have I done, I keep, scratching my head I run, yes I outrun, I hide, and wait, for them to go away Oh wait, the shadow of one, it was a ruse, he’s the real deal, still on my tail Hey, ho, I need to try, I don’t breathe, he’s still there, not very far Why did I tackle and cross the lines to be a hero, to only find that I’m gonna die! Chorus: I see them waiting Sense their craving I feel them calling Like a moth to a flame Verse 2: Now I’ve figured out what’s their game When I close, my eyes I see their inked, faces they don’t blink, only stare at me Only one, younger face untouched, by the needles stands out, & I know it right away I’m marked for him, he’s the shadow I feel, my end’s gonna be the ink on his face Chorus: I see them waiting Sense their craving I feel them calling (Feel ‘em callin) Like a moth to a flame Interlude melody: War is on, for my Soul (x2) Bridge: No surrender, are you gonna get from me, you see, you’re gonna have to earn it right No surrender, are you gonna get from me, I plan to live, so I’m gonna put up a fight No surrender, you don’t want it either, it’s a matter of skill and all about your pride No surrender, I’ll just end me myself and let my soul just fly outside No surrender, are you gonna get from me, you see, you’re gonna have to earn it right No surrender, are you gonna get from me, I plan to live, so I’m gonna put up a fight Outro: War is on, for my Soul (x2) Author: Aruna Jade

Verse 1: They’re greedy Want to eat, eat, eat Insatiable beings Bottomless pits Should we warn them Or let Mother handle it? Won’t she hurt first? Before they begin suffering? Before they begin suffering! He digs, he cuts, He burns & kills He has so many needs Needs so many thrills It IS our land Been always our time Always our sand Always our sand Perhaps a message might help Help from their beyond Beyond the mountains & skies Skies that’ll pour on them hard and long Skies that’ll pour on them hard and long Verse 2: For long have we watched silently We speak too softly for them They’re deaf, rather blind too Hence we should shake them & break them & drown them & take them Or we just wait Wait and watch Watch them end End a part of mother & themselves Author: Aruna Jade

about

An Art Metal act conceptualized and formed by multi-instrumentalist composer Vishal J.Singh (of the internationally acclaimed multi-national avant-prog band Amogh Symphony).

The line-up in this album includes Fidel Dely Murillo (drums. percussion, sampler, sound design), Vishal J. Singh (guitar, guitar-synth, sound design), Manas Chowdhary (bass, bass-synth, sound design, effects) and Tanushree Saha (vocals, light language, kazoo, valiha, synth/keys).

Manipur is a region and culture steeped in intrigue, but with little written recorded history. With legends and stories that depict forces of nature in the form of mighty deities and imposing goddesses, the cultural heritage of the Meitei people is full of inspiring folklore. Drawing inspiration from his Meitei roots with the prowess of Tanushree Saha’s fresh vocals, avant-garde composer and musician Vishal J Singh revives the spirit of Serpents of Pakhangba’s debut self-titled album in this new iteration called Neo Redux. The four-piece lineup comes together with Manas Chowdhary on bass and Fidel Dely Murillo playing the drums.

Every member of the band brings their own unique touch to the music of Serpents, which is more about the musicians following their feelings rather than a score sheet or set composition. Vishal’s composition provides a loose framework within which the band is free to improvise, jam, and express themselves without breaking the overall structure of the sound. Because of the free play nature of the music, no two renditions of the tracks are ever the same. The album includes three live tracks, Invocation, Headhunters and The Forest Belongs to the Maibi to underline this. Neo Redux has been rerecorded with Tanushree at the helm, and the incoming vocalist brings her own character to every track, effectively making it a distinctive and altogether new piece of work.

The album is an exercise in discovery, an open landscape of sound which is not bound by structure or rules. The music focuses heavily on improvisational techniques to create vivid environments. This is perhaps most evident in Tanushree’s vocal delivery which ranges from meditative chants to low pitch growls and tribal calls to Mongolian throat singing.

The tracks widely disregard the usual verse-chorus structures in favour of shifting forms, odd time signatures, and experimentation with different blends of genres that work best to evoke the changing situations depicted in the songs. For example, in the intro to Headhunters, Tanushree uses a high-pitched staccato to bring out the innocence and vulnerability of a young female character who is in danger, while the bass dances between different scales, creating a background of dissonance and discomfort. A mix of 70s funk and jazz fusion, however, tempers the grave and anxious themes of the song and infuses the situation with a sarcastic and funny overtone, reminiscent of a style famously portrayed by Tarantino's Kill Bill.

Like with Headhunters, Neo Redux has an element of theatricality tied to every track. Reminiscent of operatic settings, here the visuals are conveyed through the delivery and style of each musician in a display of varied techniques. Vultures, for instance, sees Tanushree take on multiple voices. Ranging through high-pitched screams, indigenous Meitei vocals, Mongolian throat singing and low pitched growls, each of her vocal styles menacingly portrays evil looming figures. The shapeshifting vocals are tied together by the guitar riffs that repeat throughout the track in different styles of fusion jazz, funk and metal, following the mood and feelings of the different characters.

Although the tracks include lyrics in English and Light language, make no mistake, ancient Meitei culture and history are front and center in the music of the Serpents. Their songs are sung in the form of Manipuri chants and tribal calls, and fold Vishal J Sigh’s Avant Garde and metal influences into a folkloric yet vicious soundscape. In this backdrop, Neo Redux is a freestyle display of music by four artists playing off of each other, pushing the limits of what is considered possible in their artform.
